The true story of a Texas-born serial killer is making its way to the big screen.

The Dating Game, the directorial debut of Pitch Perfect star Anna Kendrick, is currently in production in Vancouver, according to Deadline. The movie follows Cheryl Bradshaw, a contestant on a '70s matchmaking show. Bradshaw winds up selecting Rodney Alcala, who turns out to be a "psychopathic serial killer." At the time, but unbeknownst to Bradshaw, Alcala, who was born in San Antonio in 1943, had already been arrested for the rape of an 8-year-old girl and the murders of several women, according to MySanAntonio. Bradshaw, however, never ended up going on a date with Alcala. She told a crew member that "there's weird vibes coming off of him," The Dating Game contestant coordinator Ellen Metzger told 20/20 last year.

Alcala was convicted of several murders in the years after the matchmaking show. Police think he killed up to 130 people. Alcala died on death row in July 2021 from natural causes.

The role of Alcala will be played by Daniel Zovatto, who is known for his roles in It Follows (2014) and Station 11.
