APD News Release: July is "Watch Your Car" month

Not only is it hot in July, it’s also the “hottest” month of the year for car thieves.  It takes five minutes for a car to be stolen. Every two and a half minutes, a vehicle is burglarized in the State of Texas.

As part of “Watch Your Car” month, the Austin Police Department Auto Theft Interdiction Project will be working with the community to remind drivers to take precautions to prevent themselves from becoming victims.  Residents need to actively protect themselves against vehicle crime when leaving their vehicles unattended.  The average stolen vehicle is approximately over five years old.  Some are stolen for joy riding, used parts or to commit other crimes.

In honor of “Watch Your Car” month and the continuing efforts to raise awareness, the Austin Police Department Auto Theft Interdiction Project will display 20 mobile billboards on taxi cabs from the Greater Austin Transportation Company for three months, seven days a week running 24-hours a day.  The mobile billboard will travel throughout the City of Austin and reach high frequency repeat exposure.

During “Watch Your Car” month, the Austin Police Department Auto Theft Interdiction Project and the APD District Representatives will offer residents the opportunity to have their vehicles engraved with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) FREE of charge at several locations to promote auto theft and burglary theft awareness and will be available to answer any questions the community might have.  For information on the locations to have your VIN engraved, please visit http://www.austintexas.gov/department/auto-theft or http://www.austintexas.gov/sites/default/files/files/Police/VINJULY2014.pdf to view the VIN etching schedule.

The Austin Police Department Auto Theft Interdiction Project programs are funded through the Texas Automobile Burglary and Theft Prevention Authority to reduce auto theft and vehicle burglary in the State of Texas. For more information, please call APD Auto Theft Interdiction Project at (512) 974-5265.
