Today's Country - Austin

Cold Temperatures Expected

Posted December 6th, 2013 @ 3:36pm

Very cold temperatures expected the next 36 hours.  Slight chance for sleet/light freezing rain late Saturday afternoon til Sunday morning.

...AREA OF CONCERN...Temperatures - all of South Central Texas especially the Hill Country and northern sections where temperatures may stay below freezing until Sunday Afternoon.  Icing - looking at areas mainly east of Highway 281 late Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning (this is only a slight chance)

...IMPACTS...The cold temperatures in the 20s will affect most everybody.  Pipes bursting due to extended time below freezing could be an issue in many spots, mainly Hill Country and northern sections.  If light freezing rain/sleet develops late Saturday afternoon-Sunday morning...little to no accumulation is expected but could see some slick spots on mainly bridges/overpasses/elevated highways.

...TIMING...Cold temperatures will last into next week with the coldest readings lasting through early Sunday.  6 pm Saturday until 10 am Sunday would be the time to monitor closely as a slight chance for light freezing rain/sleet could develop.

...DISCUSSION...Cold arctic air remains in place and will stick around for several more days.  One wave of precipitation has pushed through this morning leaving a ton of ice in its path mainly north of South Central Texas in Dallas and OK.  Much colder temperatures however will now be the result as that cold air continues to move south.  Temps will likely fall into the 20s across most of the area tonight with even some upper teens in the western Hill Country.  Remember the Pipes, Plants, and Pets.  There is no chance for rain tonight so ice on the roads should not be an issue. We will watch this closely overnight in case a weak disturbance in the upper level flow triggers some light precipitation.  At this point we are not expecting it.

Highs tomorrow will struggle to make it above freezing over the northern half of the area...roughly from Rocksprings to Kerrville to Giddings.  Another weak disturbance is forecast to move into Texas from the southwest and bring a slight chance for light freezing rain/drizzle or some sleet to areas mainly east of Highway 281 starting in the late Saturday afternoon hours....til Sunday morning.  While there is only about a 20-30% chance of precipitation right now, if any does form, it could put a thin layer of ice on some of the bridges/overpasses.   The good news is that if the precip does form it will likely be light and should keep impacts to a minimum.  At least that is what it looks like right now.   We will continue to monitor.
