LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man on an overpass brought an hours-long shutdown of a major freeway, causing massive traffic backups through the east side of Los Angeles during Friday rush hour.
The California Highway Patrol says Interstate 5 in East LA was closed shortly before 4 p.m. and remained shut down in both directions for about three hours before officers took the man into custody.
The man, wearing long shorts, long socks and a baseball cap could be seen standing on the platform in front of a freeway sign while officers talked to him.
Sheriff's officials described him as possibly suicidal, firefighters inflated giant cushions below him, and he was taken to a hospital afterward.
The closure is near major interchanges, and the overflow is affected traffic on U.S. 101 and Interstate 710.
