LOS ANGELES (CNS) The FBI's Baltimore office today asked that anyone who knew anything about a person of interest in the kidnapping of two sisters who disappeared from a suburban Washington D.C. shopping center in 1975 because he lived in Los Angeles in 1987 contact the agency.

FBI agents in the Baltimore Division have named Michael Lee Welch, 58, as that person of interest in the disappearance of Sheila and Katherine Lyon. The sisters disappeared and were never seen again.

Welch is a convicted sex offender who has been in prison in Delaware since 1997. Working as a ride operator for a carnival company, he traveled throughout the nation and was arrested in several states and charged with sexual offenses against young girls.

"We understand we're asking people to think back several decades to remember details they may not think matter,'' said Steve Vogt, special agent in Maryland.

"However, the information you provide could be vital in our search for evidence, and put to rest difficult questions for the Lyon family and for any other victims who may exist,''

Anyone who encountered Welch can call investigators at 1 (800) CALL-FBI of submit any evidence to http://tips.fbi.gov.
