SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) — A gang member has been convicted of killing a popular Santa Monica High School student seven years ago.
The Los Angeles Times reports 25-year-old Jose Zapien was found guiltyearlier this week of fatally shooting Eduardo Lopez in February 2006 as he walked in Santa Monica. The 15-year-old was a standout outfielder on the school's baseball team.
Zapien also was convicted of gunning down 22-year-old Miguel Martin in a city park and the attempted murders of a dozen other people between 2004 and 2006.
Zapien is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 9 and faces multiple life sentences without parole.
Police say Zapien is a member of a gang that operates on the Los Angeles area's Westside.
