Birth rates in the US have gone down from nearly 70 per 1000 women in 2007 to under 63 last year -- that's a 10 percent drop.

The drop-off is almost exclusively among 15 to 29 year olds. At the same time, the ownership of small dogs, or pets weighing less than 20 pounds, is going in the opposite direction.

Americans have been buying more small dogs each year since 1999. The small dog population has more than doubled in the US since then, and market research says the upward trend will continue.
